EL GIBBON DE LOS GUIZOT: Aproximación a la historia de una edición afortunada

Resumen

En 1812 se publicó una nueva edición francesa de Decline and Fall de Gibbon. Los responsables de la misma fueron François Guizot, que adjuntó un importante conjunto de notas, y Pauline de Meulan, que revisó la traducción. La tarea conjunta los acercó y ese mismo 1812 contrajeron matrimonio. La obra fue un gran éxito de crítica y público, y las notas de Guizot se incorporaron a ediciones posteriores del libro de Gibbon en inglés y en español. Con ese trabajo Guizot se inició en el oficio de historiador y reunió las credenciales necesarias para ser nombrado, también en 1812, catedrático de historia moderna de la Facultad de Letras de París.

A new French edition of Gibbon's Decline and Fall was published in 1812. The editors were François Guizot, who added an important set of notes, and Pauline de Meulan, who revised the translation. The work brought them closer together and they were married in 1812. The work was a great critical and public success, and Guizot's notes were incorporated into later editions of Gibbon's book in English and Spanish. With this work, Guizot was initiated into the historian's profession, and he was also appointed, in 1812, professor of modern history at the Faculté des Lettres in Paris.
